Q: Just who are these Knowledge Professionals that you refer to?
A: Knowledge Professionals are those people who we used to call “white collar” workers back in the 20th century. Now of course it has a lot less to do with the color of your collar and a lot more to do with applying multi-dimensional expertise to the use, creation and exchange of information and intangibles to generate innovation and business value. Using that definition, the population of Knowledge Professionals is broad and ever expanding.
Although it would be tempting to have a limited view of Knowledge Professionals as only those who work in the IT department, this would certainly be a mistaken impression.
If the main activities in your day-to-day job involve creating valuable knowledge and intangible assets to support operational decisions, then you are indeed a Knowledge Professional. If you used to “go to work”, but now find that “work comes to you”, and if the main activities in your day-to-day job can be carried out in any location, such as sitting on a park bench with your laptop computer or wireless PDA, then you fit this definition very well.
Since we live, work and socialize in the Information Age, it is the Knowledge Professionals who are at the epicenter of the most exciting and impactful opportunities. Succeeding within this non-stop flow of opportunity requires that the Knowledge Professional continually enhance his/her value creation capabilities and attitudes. The great news is that the tools, knowledge and resources to help this enhancement process are just as plentiful as the career opportunities themselves!
